My brand design process (step by step)

Updated: Dec 16, 2020

Whether you only need a logo or an entire identity system, my design process is proven to produce lasting results. I’ve found that research, and good communication through the iterative design process leads to a strong visual identity and happy customers.

1. DISCOVERY

The most important step in forging a brand identity is learning who you are and what you stand for. Designing a logo is a dialogical process so let’s talk.

It starts by hearing about your business in your own words, familiarizing myself with your history and story, understanding your audience, mapping your competition, and charting your future goals.

The most important piece is defining your ideal customer and developing a visual strategy to connect with them.

Part of the analysis includes a visual appraisal of your competitors and the marketplace more broadly.

2. MOODBOARD

After our first meeting (about 45 minutes) and my research, I create a moodboard for your brand. A moodboard is an arrangement of images, materials, colors and pieces of text that will project a particular style or concept. We'll go through this together to make sure we are on the right track for the overall feel of the brand.

3. LOGO DESIGN

With the information gathered in the discovery phase, I'll create 2-4 different concepts for the logo and present multiple variations of each. If necessary, we'll go through a few rounds of revisions, identifying the elements that you like and the elements that you don't from all of the concepts. This will help me deliver the best results for your target audience and your organization’s leadership.

4. BRANDING GUIDELINES + BRAND COLLATERAL

Now that we have a logo we can define the logo variations, typography, color palette, photography style, icons, patterns, and more. This full visual identity portfolio will be the backbone of your brand going forward, valuable elements for all parts of your organization.

If your project includes brand collaterals, some or all of these might be included:

  • Business card, letterhead, and envelopes

  • Packaging

  • Social media imagery pack

  • Catalogue or brochure

  • Signage

  • PowerPoint presentation template

5. LAUNCH

Time to show the world! When you’ve approved the final designs, I’ll create the artwork files and deliver them to you and/or your print vendor. If needed, I’ll contact printers for quotes and manage the printing process for you.

If you have a particular brand identity design project in mind, let’s talk about it!
